Seagull Swarm

Being in Naples, Florida for the winter is pretty nice. I took myself to the beach at 16th Street South and enjoyed a day in the sun reading and sketching when about 1000 seagulls flew in and landed on the beach. Photographing birds in flight is a crap shoot and everyone was running around taking pictures. At one point when the birds took flight I just held up the camera and shot it. Now I'm using it for my desktop background. Check out Vulture Cafe for some really great bird photos by Dawn.

wow Mary! great photos of the gulls and the everglades. I envy you there in the warmth. your gull photo of them all flying looks like a black skimmer right near the middle, very cool bird! the other gull photos look like laughing and ring-billed gulls. And I love the everglades pic of the Anhinga almost camaflaged.I cannot wait for our trip down there in the future. And thank you for mentioning me!

Hi Mary,

just black Skimmer, no gull attached! Black skimmers usually feed at night and while flying low over the water, they leave the lower half of their bill in the water to skim fish up into their mouths.
no eagles today darn it!
